The last photo in the Travel Section of The NY Times is titled "Why we Travel." The photo captures a traveler explaining where they are and the purpose for their travels.
I have noticed that this photo rarely includes a traveler with food or engaging in any culinary delight. Yet I would argue that in most of our experiences, whether in our own community, own country or even when traveling it is food that defines our moments. It is food that opens us up socially, encourages us to interact, to have a shared moment and to learn a little more about the world or the new people who are entering it.
The list for why we eat is endless. We eat for good times and for bad. We eat for pleasure, for nostalgia, to explore, to survive, to share culture, to relax, to celebrate, to share knowledge, to embrace local foods, to taste something new, to sense pleasure, to find similarities, to note differences, to build community, and to create a movement.
Based on this NY Times piece, I want to create a photographic journey of my culinary travels called "Why I Eat." A photo catalogue that captures the moments I am enjoying food or a meal with a stranger, a community of people, group of friends, family, or a partner. Maybe it's a birthday, maybe it's a holiday, maybe it's just a Saturday - if there is food and a purpose then I want it captured.
I say we all go somewhere, eat something and record the moment.
Go to a Slideluck Potshow in your city and take a photo of the meal. Lets us at SLPS know who is part of your foodie experience, the name of the dish/foods you are eating and post it. If not at a SLPS event, then maybe its somewhere else. Either way we want to know about it.
And title it Why I Eat.
