rob angus said… - I am interested in ambient detail, and the convergence of time and happenstance which can lend an aesthetic quality to something otherwise unnoticed. Most of my images are details of plants, rocks, weathered wood, water, and the hulls of ships docked in a canal near my home. I am interested in textures created by weathering, rust, scratches, scrapes, dents, cracks, reflections, shadows, and similar elements that change over time. For many years my photography was strictly documentary- the images frequently looked like abstract paintings but were unaltered. More recently I have been ‘mirroring’ images in Photoshop; I copy the photo, flip it horizontally, vertically, and horizontally again to create a kaleidoscopic image where all the interior borders meet and reflect each other. This process imposes form, pattern, and sometimes texture on the image by connecting and enhancing lines and patterns that are present in the photo, but does not change the photo. The original image is intact, but reflected and multiplied. I shoot with this process in mind, framing the photograph in a way that certain elements will connect when the photo is mirrored. I see my work as a sort of ‘abstract ambient documentary’, in that I create an abstract image out of an unaltered photo of an ambient detail from the world around me.
