Slideluck Potshow will be launching a pilot program in the New York City public schools this fall. Our non-profit arts organization (501c3 pending,) will be working with after school photography programs in eight schools throughout the five boroughs.
The Slideluck Youth Initiative (SLYI) fosters creative expression and empowers students through the use of photography and multimedia storytelling. In doing so, SLYI develops valuable skills, enriches student's lives, and strengthens community.
Over the course of twelve weeks, we will be working with each group of students to conceive, develop, and produce bodies of work that will ultimately be presented at a slideshow potluck-- to which all of the mentors, students, their friends, teachers, and families will be invited to participate. The theme of the first show will be Community, and each student will define this as they see fit.
We are thrilled to see that there seems to be a great deal of interest in this project! Here are some ways to get involved:
* Become a mentor for one of the sites. We are looking for individuals from the Slideluck community: artists, photo editors, curators, multimedia producers, photojournalists, photographer's agents, art therapists, designers, creative directors-- or what have you-- to mentor a group of students. The commitment would be a minimum of two after school site visits and attendance of the final show, though more involvement is always welcomed!
* Host a field trip. We are seeking photo studios, ad agencies, art galleries, magazines, photo agencies, museums, etc., that would be willing to let one or two groups of students drop in for a brief visit one fall afternoon.
* Donate used photo equipment. The schools we will be working with have a limited amount of resources. Make a tax-deductible donation of your digital SLRs, lenses, video/camcorders, point & shoots, audio recording equipment, computers, projectors, and printers. We are also looking for 35mm, medium or large format cameras, film, darkroom equipment or supplies. If you have equipment that no longer serves your purpose, please don't hesitate to put it in the hands of an aspiring young photographer!
* Support the Slideluck Youth Initiative (SLYI.) This project is new, exciting, and has the power to transform the lives of many young people. We are looking to partner with like-minded individuals and organizations to help realize this project-- first in New York City-- and eventually in communities worldwide. This can be done by becoming a member of Slideluck Potshow, through corporate sponsorships, or with donations/grants specifically targeted towards the SLYI.
Thank you very much for your time. Please contact us if you have any questions, thoughts, or would like to get involved with the Slideluck Youth Initiative.
